Ideas For Making Family Life Easier When Your Partner Is In The Military

If your partner is in the military and spends most of their time away from home working, family life can be difficult. You see, when your partner is away, you are left to fly solo, taking care of your children on your own.

While your partner is deployed, you’re technically not a single mom, but you are having to cope as one. No matter whether your husband is away for a few weeks or a few months, it’s never easy when you are flying solo.

Family life is hard at the best of times, and even more so when you are dealing with everything on your own. However, if you follow the ideas below, you can make being a ‘single’ mom a little easier for yourself.

Move into military housing

Your friends will do their best to help support you, but they won’t understand what you and your children are going through. The only people who will are other military families, which is why living in a military community is a good idea.

Not only will you have support on tap whenever you need it, but you will also find that there are lots of things to keep your kids occupied. From after school activities and group games, to free childcare, military housing comes with lots of family benefits.

Keep busy

While the kids are at school or occupied with activities, make sure to keep yourself busy. It’s hard being away for your partner for a long time, but you can make it easier by staying occupied. Don’t sit around doing nothing, as you will only end up dwelling on things.

Take up a new sport, get a new job, focus on getting in shape – do something to keep busy. It doesn’t matter what you choose to focus on; you just need to make sure that you keep yourself as active as possible.

Talk to your partner regularly

You will find it much easier to cope with your partner being away if you keep in touch with him. Depending on where he has been deployed to, this could be via phone, email or Skype.

Or, if he’s in a place that doesn’t have a phone or internet connection, this may have to be via good old fashioned pen and paper. Just make sure that you keep in touch with your partner, as this will make things easier for you and your children.

You could always send him a care package in the post if you can’t call him. These are a great way to show your partner that you and the kids miss and care about him.

Prepare food in advance

Being a mom who’s flying solo is never easy, as simple tasks are ten times harder, such as making dinner. If you are worried about having the time to make your children healthy meals, consider making them in advance, and then freezing them.

That way on hectic days, you don’t have to stress about making food, all you need to do is defrost something and pop it in the oven.

Flying solo while your husband is away isn’t easy, but you can make life a little less stressful by following these tips.
