An intruder entering your home is the things nightmares are made of, and while it is statistically rare to have someone break into your home, it is still a possibility.

Keeping your home and family safe from an intruder, takes a lot more than simply securing your property. You need to have the right protective equipment, know how to use it and know how much force you are legally allowed to use.

If an intruder enters your home and you injure them, did you know that it could be you who ends up in jail, not them? It might sound crazy, but while you can protect yourself in your home, you are only allowed to use a certain amount of force.

Here is our guide to protecting yourself and your family from an intruder, while staying within the law:

Invest in security lighting and camera

The best thing you can do to protect your home from an intruder is secure your property. Putting the right measures in place to prevent an intruder from making it through your front door is the first step in protecting yourself and your family.

Start with your home’s exterior. Invest in motion-sensor lighting for the outside of your property. This means that if anyone attempts to access your property, your security lights will come on, putting potential intruders off.

You could also invest in security camera for the outside of your property. This will not only put any intruders off, but in the case of a break in, will catch the whole thing on camera, ideal for using in court.

Make sure all locks are secure

Of course, the most important things for preventing intruders from gaining access to your home are secure locks and double glazed windows. As well as a police linked burglar alarm – showcasing this on the front of your property should be enough to deter any intruder.

Keep a phone to hand

In the unlikely event, that an intruder does gain access to your home, it is crucial that you know how to keep yourself and your family safe.

Always keep a mobile phone by your bed, so that in the case of an intrusion you can immediately call the police. Calling the police is always the first thing you should do, as the sooner they arrive the safer you will be.

Have a designated safe room

To ensure that you family are as safe from an intruder as possible, it is a good idea to create a safe room. This room should contain a flashlight, bottled water, and a fully-charged mobile phone. As well as self-defense products like a pepper shot pepper spray, you may need to consider a stun gun, and anything else that you might need to protect yourself from an intruder.

Your safe room should have doors that open outwards as these are harder to breach and should hold until the police arrive. This room should also ideally have no windows and a deadlock on the door.

Know the law

While you want to be able to protect your home and family from an intruder, it is crucial that you always stay within the law. Otherwise, it could be you who ends up in jail, not the intruder.

Go online and learn what the laws are in your area regarding protecting yourself and your family from an intruder. Research how much force is suitable and what you legally can and can’t do.

Follow these helpful tips, and you should be able to keep yourself and your family safe in the event of an intruder entering your home.
